about
In a series of sound gestures that took place over a duration of time, December 2019 to April 2020, this aural reflection employs multiple instruments, strategies and methods of sound generation that creates a sonic self-portrait rather than a traditional visual one. My composition selects from up to 15, 1-hour soundtracks that were created during the full or dark moon cycles.
The resulting complex composition undulates, pulses, cracks, pops and buzzes to reveal a sonified likeness of myself. The flaws and imperfections are part of the non-representation of the self viewed from a sonic tunnel of time with each plane of sound part of a whole subconscious structure.
For the uniSol project, each timeframe provided the potential for artists to be present in the act of deep performance at the same moment in time, across geographic space without technological communication, but through human telematic sensing, or “blind hearing.” Each performance would be recorded, from each artist’s studio, then be mixed by one or more of the participating artists. Sometimes these mixes were “as it is” with little or no adjustments, which resulted in collective exploration of the power of chance, and the power of tuning into the potential of each participating artist performing within a remote ensemble. There is no conversation beforehand about what we will perform, or a predetermined action or gesture.
The uniSol project explores and implements the freedom to research extrasensory communication through art practice and related media and to create stimulating sensual, spiritual and aesthetic experiences, “to create a vision of a future world ...”
The project simultaneously engages artists across various time-zones in different global locations in ABSTRACT inter-play through sound. It is a “strategy of engagement free from interpretation” and category, pushing and striving for a kind of mutual listening without hearing, a hyper sensitivity to compose a sound collaboration, with trust and respect for the sound collective.
